Each week I’d like to write about a small step we can all take to become healthier, whether it’s having a small salad each day or doing 30 jumping jacks in the morning. Your feedback is critical so we can support each other and share our experiences.
For Week One, the small step is to have a fruit with breakfast (for those who skip breakfast, have fruit FOR breakfast).
It is a well known fact the breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and people who skip breakfast are often the most unhealthy. Having breakfast will help you eat less later in the day. Having a fruit with breakfast will often provide a bit of fiber, something many of us are lacking in our diets.
For example, a medium sized apple with the skin has about 3-4 grams of fiber. The type of fiber (soluble) in the apple allows sugar to be released and absorbed more slowly, giving us a full feeling for longer. Apples also have insoluble fiber, which helps move, ahem, bulk through the intestines more easily.
Apples aren’t the only fruits high in fiber–you can have a pear or a banana.
Follow this small step, and you’ll be closer to making your one third count.
